Shared Reading is all about connection, bringing people together through stories, poems, and conversation. Whether you’re already part of one of our groups, considering volunteering, or simply curious about what we do, we’re so glad you’re here.
This monthly newsletter is your gateway to everything happening across the Shared Reading community programme, from new groups and volunteer opportunities to inspiring stories from our participants and partners.
We are looking forward to sharing our progress, celebrating our volunteers, and exploring ways to collaborate with individuals and organisations who share our passion for wellbeing and connection through the power of reading.
Shared Reading Team at Events in November
Thank you to everyone who came along to see us on the Shared Reading stands at our Autumn Market, the Ethical Market or the Derby Book Festival.
We loved getting to talk to everyone about our brilliant programme including volunteering with us or attending a group, along with handing out 'golden ticket' offers!
Don't forget - if you picked up a Golden Ticket at our stall, you have until 31st January 2026 to hand one of these to our shared reading volunteers at a single open session and we will announce the winner of a £10 'All for One' voucher in February 2026.
Volunteer for us
Interested in volunteering for us?
Volunteers are at the heart of Shared Reading. They bring warmth, creativity and kindness to every group, helping people across Derby and Derbyshire connect, reflect and feel less alone through the joy of stories and poems.
Whether you’re an experienced facilitator, a lifelong book lover, or simply someone who wants to make a difference in your community, we’d love to have you on our team.
Most of our volunteers help run Shared Reading groups in libraries, cafés, hospitals, care homes, colleges and community venues across Derby and Derbyshire.
Each Shared Reading group is led by at least two volunteers who plan, read aloud and facilitate sessions together, creating a welcoming space where participants can relax, connect and feel included.
We also have other opportunities to get involved.

Our new Beyond Words Shared Reading group at Mickleover Library started last month. In collaboration with Books Beyond Words this group brings people together to share word-free picture stories and ideas in a friendly and inclusive setting.
The group is open to adults (18+) with learning disabilities and their companions or carers. Led by trained volunteers and library staff, the group takes place on the first Tuesday of the month from 2.00pm-3.00pm.
If you'd like to join one of our groups but can't make it in person, not to worry because we are starting a new online Shared Reading group in January.
Register your interest here and we'll let you know further details about the group as soon as they're available.
