We are currently planning a hybrid Festival with a mix of live, live streamed, recorded and virtual events from 27 May – 5 June 2021. If the government’s Roadmap goes to plan and the four conditions are met, our venues will start to reopen from 17 May and we plan to host live Festival events.

Our schools’ programme includes Meet the Author events for both primary and secondary schools across Derby to inspire a love of reading.

Each year we invite all Derby City schools to send pupils to our Meet the Author events.

At our first Festival in 2015 we welcomed Sir Michael Morpurgo to Derby Theatre where we had a packed audience of over 500 primary school children and teachers. Since then we have held them every year and for the past three years have had two events for Years 2, 3 & 4 and for Years 5 & 6. Authors have included Lauren Child, Marcia Williams, Rachel Rooney, Sarah McIntryre, Philip Reeve, Jeanne Willis and poet Joseph Coelho. The events give the children the chance to meet their favourite authors and to visit a theatre, often for the first time. Local educational suppliers, Cosy, have sponsored the events for the past three years.

In 2016 we held our first event for secondary schools and have repeated these each year at the University of Derby for Year 7s, giving many pupils their first experience of visiting the University as well as hearing an author talk about their work.
