Each year the Festival organises the Derby Children’s Picture Book Award with local schools. The 2025 winner is Flower Block, a magical tale of what happens in a community when a mysterious plant grows overnight, by debut author Lanisha Butterfield and illustrator Hoang Giang. 

Join Lanisha for a workshop to learn the magic formula for writing your own short story. Whether you want to create your story from start to finish or put your own unique spin on a classic – as she did, it will be covered in this step by step guide to engaging, compelling storytelling.
