Monday 3 June, 10:30-11:30am at Artcore (Artcore Gallery, 8 Albert Street, Osnabruck Square, Derby DE1 2DS)

Professor of Modern History, Paul Elliott explores the impact of Victorian and Edwardian tree planting in British towns and cities. It is evident everywhere: from historic parks and green spaces to great avenues of metropolitan street trees.

Many woodland areas were also absorbed into urban areas and the development of the suburbs meant that towns were closely connected to regional country environments through green corridors. Trees and shrubs were planted in municipal parks and squares and transformed private gardens as objects of beauty and organs of health and sanitation, providing colour, continuity and contrast.

Paul explores the social and cultural impact of urban greening between 1820 and 1920, using Derby as an example.
