3 Festivals for 2024

“Being involved with the Book Festival has been inspiring. The lessons became a platform for tolerance and understanding. I have learnt so much from the students – how they are positive and optimistic and really do appreciate life on Lexis.” Jacqueline Gindele, Lexis Teacher

The Derby College Lexis programme takes 100 or more students every year from different parts of the world and with widely differing experiences. Some come with their families, some are refugees fleeing hunger and war. Having worked with the programme for over 5 years we have always been amazed by the magic of the Lexis Programme. How it welcomes these young people, often isolated and friendless, and creates a warm, friendly and supportive environment in which they can learn and grow. In this book the students use their own words to tell the story of how they become a truly ‘Global Family’.

The illustrations are done by the art students at Derby College, who had to complete most of their work during the early stages of the pandemic in March and April 2020, without College resources and with only virtual support. We think they have done a fantastic job.

“In class, I feel very relaxed and accepted because I get to know people with different nationalities, cultures and languages and it motivates us to work as a team. I’ve learnt how sweet, caring, honest and friendly people from Pakistan are.” Rexford, Ghana
