Sir Tony Robinson, actor, presenter, historical expert, star of Blackadder and Time Team – and Patron of RSPCA Derby - makes his adult fiction debut with The House of Wolf, an earthy, entertaining and gloriously witty recreation of the Anglo-Saxons, Alfred the Great and the making of England.
The story takes us from a papal prison in Rome to Wessex under the rule of King Aethelwolf, whose power is fading. He has no obvious heir to take over and defeat the Norlanders. On the island of Lindisfarne, a female slave is bent on revenge against her Saxon captors and seeks to destroy Wessex. So begins an epic struggle between greed and idealism, ambition and betrayal, freedom and tyranny. Because change always meets with resistance, and on the path to power, nobody can be trusted.
Sir Tony has a special connection to Derby. In 2020, he and his wife, Lady Louise, adopted a little Westie called Holly Berry from RSPCA Derby, an independent rehoming charity. Having got to know the team and seen first-hand the wonderful work they do at their Abbey Street centre, Lady Louise and Sir Tony kindly agreed to become Patrons and have since been tireless advocates for the charity and its vital work.
Tony will be in conversation with BBC Midlands Correspondent Navtej Johal.
