Congratulations to Ben Duke and author Sunjeev Sahota who are nominated in two categories for the prestigious South Bank Sky Arts Awards. The winners will be announced during the Festival on 5 June.
Ben Duke, Artistic Director of dance company Lost Dog, is nominated in the Dance category for Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me), which he will perform at Déda Theatre on Thursday 9 June at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12/£10. Ben won the award for Outstanding Male Performance at the National Dance Awards in January 2016.
Derby born author Sunjeev Sahota is nominated in the Literature category for his Man Booker shortlisted second novel, The Year of the Runaways. Sunjeev will be joining us on Monday 6 June at an event, sponsored by Freeths, in QUAD at 6pm and tickets cost £8/£6.

Big Bus Book Swap
If you travel on Trent Barton Buses’ Sixes and Villager routes, look out for the special turquoise bookcases onboard 22 of their buses from next week. Bring along one of your books and you can swap it for one you fancy reading from the bookcase. You can also pick up one of our Festival bookmarks featuring the winning stories in our Fifty Word Flash Fiction Writing Competition and are illustrated by University of Derby student, Kaye Lindsay.
Colin Hazelden to interview Tim Moore
We are delighted that BBC East Midlands’ Presenter and Sports Correspondent, Colin Hazelden will be joining us to interview Tim Moore at Derby Arena on Sunday 5 June. The event, sponsored by Long Eaton Cycles. will feature Tim’s cycling adventures, including cycling the route of the Tour de France and riding the 3,160k route of the 1914 Giro Italia on a gearless, wooden-wheeled road bike with wine corks for brakes. His latest adventure involves cycling the length of the old Iron Curtain on a two wheeled East German shopping bike. Tickets cost £10, which includes tea and cakes.
Additional children’s event
Festival partners, Sinfonia ViVA are presenting an additional children’s event on Friday 10 June at 11.30am. Flutter and Fly is an exciting musical journey for children under 6 and their families! Join in and sing along. The venue is their new state-of-the-art inflatable venue, Cabinet of Curiosity, which will be set up in the Market Place. Flitting birds, jet planes, a kite tied up with string – all of these will be imaginatively portrayed by the musicians, and complemented by the wonderful illustrations of visual artist, Eleanor Meredith. Each child will also be given a free book and CD of Flutter & Fly, allowing you to relive the magic over and over again!
