We are deeply saddened to hear the news that Paddy Ashdown has died this evening.

We were lucky enough to be joined by Paddy in October at a special Festival event in QUAD.  He gave a fascinating talk about his last book ‘Nein!’, the story of those at the very top of Hitler’s Germany.  During his short time with us, he was full of insight, humour and passion, not to mention being also a wonderful storyteller.  Paddy arrived early to speak to two Derby College students who interviewed him about the current political climate. Not only did he make the time to talk to them but he was very kind and sincere, talking about his great optimism for the future and the compassion he saw in the younger generations.  He was truly a one-off.  We were very privileged to meet him and hear him talk in Derby, at a time when he would have known his cancer diagnosis.

We send our condolences and best wishes to his family and friends.
