My first steps in Derby

Peter Nemet

When I started primary school in Derby in 2008, I was 7 years old. The first day in school was scary and I felt very nervous because I didn’t know anyone there and listening to everyone speaking a strange language was shocking for me. The only thing that made me a bit comfortable was that all the teachers and the children were very nice to me. But the best part of the day was when I finished studying and I went home.

After a few days I met some of my classmates at our local park in Normanton and we played football in the playground. I had lots of fun and I started enjoying school. Also it was lovely to watch my confidence at speaking and understanding English grow. This made me more enthusiastic to talk to everyone in my class including my teachers who were supportive.

When I moved to Bemrose Secondary School, my favourite lesson was drama, because it was the only time I could let my feelings and imagination out and not get into trouble with my teachers. I was always eager to participate in all the drama tasks and that made me feel comfortable while working as a group reading and listening to stories and acting different scenes.
