Can you write about ‘Journeys’ in just 50 words?
That is the challenge we are setting for our 2017 Fifty Word Flash Fiction Writing Competition which is launched today (10 January). We are looking for stories of exactly fifty words, as calculated on the website entry form (excluding the title). You can interpret the theme of ‘Journeys’ in any way you wish, but your work must be original, and it must tell a complete story.
There are two age categories – under 16s and over 16s. A panel of experts will judge the entries and each winning story will be:
- illustrated by students from the University of Derby
- printed on Festival bookmarks, which will be used to promote the Festival (2000 of each story)
- published on our website. The closing date for the competition is midnight 10 February 2017.
All entries must be submitted online using our website form.
Last year’s competition (on the theme of ‘Secrets’) attracted around 300 entries and we look forward to receiving even more this year.
The winners will be invited to the Derby Reads event in QUAD on 11 April 2017 to launch our Festival programme.
If you need some tips on Flash Fiction, take a look at some of last year’s winning stories, which we hope will inspire you to enter!
“Between you and me,” said Granny, “I pretend to be asleep sometimes.”
“How will I know?” I asked. I was just twelve.
“My little finger,” she said. “If it moves, I’m listening.”
By the hospital bed mother weeps, “Gran doesn’t know us.”
I watch the finger. “She does,” I say.
Pawn to E4.
Pawn to F5.
A look of deep concentration draws across his face as he furrows his brow.
E4 to F5 pawn takes pawn.
“I have no idea how to play this game”, I think. I wait what seems an appropriate time, stroke my chin and move the horsey one.
Hope these inspire you to get writing! Good luck!
