Have you taken a look at all the great children and families’ events we have planned this year? Check the website for full details.
Andy Cope events at QUAD
Both children and adults will love hearing local author Andy Cope at this year’s Festival. Andy is probably best known for his Spydog, Spycat and Spypups series of books. He will be joining us on Saturday 4 June for two events in QUAD, sponsored by the Ashby Fund: at 11.30am with his Spydog, Lara (tickets £6/£4) and at 1.45pm to talk about his inspirational book The Art of Being a Brilliant Teenager (tickets £5).
Andy has visited lots of schools in the area and children are always captivated by his energy and enthusiasm. He is also a motivational speaker and organises Brilliant Derby, a project to empower the children of Derby to deliver ‘positivity’, ‘happiness’ and ‘brilliance’ across their schools and communities.
Bringing Books to Life
Many of the children and families’ events are free, including the full day of activities at the Bringing Books to Life event in the Market Place on Saturday 4 June. The event, sponsored by Deborah Fern, starts at 10am and continues until 4pm. There will be timed theatre shows and storytelling sessions, but you can also take part in recreating your favourite book character in Pavement Art, drawing and collaging the Magnificent Mural and cartoon drawing. Look out for Willy Wonka who will make a guest appearance too!
Children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character for a chance of winning a book token – judging takes place after the theatre performances. And finally, make sure you come along with a book to swap on the children’s Book Swap stall (see below).
Children’s Book Swap
Wanted! Can you help? We need good quality children’s books for ages 3 – 11 for Derby Book Festival’s Book Swap on Saturday 4 June.
If you have any uncherished books that need a new home, please deliver them to the reception at Sadlerbridge Studios, which is the new building located at the bottom of Sadlergate on Bold Lane.
Augustus and His Smile premiere
Face Up Theatre will be premiering a new children’s show of Augustus and His Smile, based on the much loved book by Catherine Rayner. There will be two performances at Derby Museum & Art Gallery on Sunday 5 June: at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and i is suitable for little cubs of 3 – 8 years (and their grown ups). You can also pop into The Coffee House at the Museum for a Tiger Tea before or after the performance.
Children’s Book Trail – 27 May to 12 June
Children’s events kick off on 27 May (the start of the school half term holiday) with the launch of the Children’s Book Trail along Sadlergate and the Strand Arcade. Pick up a quiz sheet from any of the participating shops and spot where the children’s book characters are hiding! All completed sheets should be returned to the White Stuff shop where they will be entered into the Book Trail Prize Draw.
There’s lots more happening over the weekend in QUAD, Derby Museum & Art Gallery, intu Derby, Deda, Derby Theatre and Mickleover Library, so check the website for full details.
